Key Stage One

Our area of learning for the next two terms is entitled PLANTS and ANIMALS units of learning have been planned in a cross curricular way to enable all children to learn in a manner which is both is relevant and meaningful.

Children will be exploring the plants, animals and insects which can be found within the school grounds and the local environment. Visits to our newly refurbished pond area will be used to develop children’s skills of observation, classification and vocabulary.  Starting with what the children already know they will be observing flowers, fruits and vegetables in order to enrich their knowledge and vocabulary by describing colour, texture and shape.

Through art the children will make careful observational drawings which they will develop into pictures, paintings and textiles. Links with works of art by famous artists will enable children to explore how plants and animals have been represented in the past. Music will be used as a vehicle to explore melody and rhythm linked to work on jungle animals. Through the use of percussion instruments the children will explore sound and develop their knowledge of how these instruments can be played to achieve a range of effects. ICT will enable children to record and share their ideas through photographs, taped recordings and for our year 2 children the opportunity to produce their own Powerpoint presentations.

Learning in Science will lead the children to develop investigational skills as they pose and answer questions about germination and growth. As plant detectives children will be challenged to solve questions and puzzles based upon the plants and animals to be found within the school grounds.
